Jockstrap Queen
What man in his right mind doesn't love wearing a great looking jock strap, I know I do! One of my favorite websites currently out there where I go to first when the need to shop for a new jockstrap comes over me is jockstrapqueen.com.
In fact my current favorite is "Bad Boy & Chains" (I'd wear it on the outside of my jeans if I wasn't afraid of the looks I'd receive) and apparently I'm not alone because according to Susan Boyer, the creative design genius behind Jockstrap Queen, it is her best selling jock.
This jock features a really cool “embroidered skull on the back of the waistband. One side features two black pleather loops, which hold the chains. Chains vary. The chains are easily removable with a sturdy snap hook. It has a 3-inch waistband with a soft, plush interior and 1-inch leg straps to provide a secure fit. The pouch is a comfortable knitted mesh pouch with a patented contour fit. Gives perfect lift and support. It is shrink resistant.”
I fell in love with the recommended skull acces sory chain. Since it clips off for washing it can also double as an awesome wallet chain. I love skulls, in fact I have one my left bicep done by my favorite artist Georgia O'Keeffe. She didn't do the tattoo of course but she did paint "Skull With Calico Rose". A very unique tattoo to go with a very unique jockstrap and a unique designer to say the least.
Susan studied fashion design at FIDM, however her unique interest in jockstraps came about due in part to her hairdresser; "he is a jock guy and he gave me the idea to do more with jockstraps. I researched the jock world a bit and I came up with the idea of making jockstraps with embellishments" she says. I asked Susan "if it has been hard to be a straight woman trying to make a name for herself in a male dominated industry?" "Actually all the men in the industry have been really great. They are surprised at first, but do take me very seriously once we start to talk and they see my products and website. I think they figure that if a woman is in this business she must be serious! There’s an uncertainty of how openly they can talk around me – whether they have to be all guarded. It’s a very sexual company. It’s sexy, it’s hot, it’s jockstraps. You know, I mean it’s fetish wear, it’s all kinds of stuff and men are unsure of how openly they can discuss men's sexuality [with her]. So I have to open that door a bit and say something in response to something they are saying so they know they can speak rather freely – which does sort of surprise them.”
The Jockstrap Queen also offers a hard to find item that’s perfect for playtime. She’s the only purveyor online of men’s opera length gloves. What are opera gloves? Well, if you happen to remember the dance number for “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend” in the Marilyn Monroe classic, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes or the famous Madonna video, those sexy pink arm length gloves Marilyn and Madonna wore are called opera gloves and they are the main inspiration for Susan’s product. And as any drag queen can tell you, finding women’s clothing made large enough for men can be a real bitch. So how did Susan find them? She didn’t. She made them! “I contacted this woman who is in New York and is a very famous glove manufacturer and told her my problem and what I wanted to do and she thought it was so funny. She laughed and she said, ‘I like you and I’m going to make you gloves.’ It was so awesome! I worked with her and we came up with gloves with a larger hand, a wider bicep, a little bit of a longer glove and also made with a heavier material. So it’s really weighted nicely too,” she concludes.
I could feel Susan’s enthusiasm for her new business during our telephone conversation. Even in these uncertain economic times she has seen there is a market for her jocks. I asked her if she was scared to launch a new business venture and she replied “You know, I don’t have that fear, I’m not sure if it’s stupidity or what, but I don’t have it. I feel like everyone is still out there playing and having fun and feeling sexy and going to parties, also having a price range has been really important for business. My jocks run from $16.95 up and I have a bracelet as low as $16.00. So there is something for everyone depending upon their budget."
Parties and event participation are a big part of the Jockstrap Queen’s business plan. She had a booth set up at last year’s Pride in Palm Springs and went to Leather Pride a couple weeks later. She is already hard at work producing a special line of jocks just in time for the White Party in April. She is also in talks to help with a EQCA benefit in the spring.
Susan always pictured herself partnering with different people for fundraising events. “I always pictured my company from the beginning going that way which is really exciting for me. Sexy men in jocks are a natural for fundraising!”
The Jockstrap Queen has been overwhelmed by the community response since she launched her local business. Initial surprise quickly turned into a supportive network of folks who are really excited to help Susan any way they can. She has a cadre of sexy male models to choose from to model her goods whenever the need arises. She credits her customer base for always giving her valuable feedback and suggestions for new designs. “I’m working with so many local people [with this company] and there’s just an awesome pool of local talent her in the valley,” Susan says. “Everything from my marketing, my seamstress, my embroidery, my print work, my models – there’s just so many aspects of my business that I want to keep in the valley.”
When I asked Susan what kind of design trends she envisions for the future, she told me with a sly laugh "be cause I am the innovator, I am the one setting the trends you'll have to keep checking my website to find out.
